That means a motor can draw more amps than the basic calculation suggests, so size circuits and breakers with that in mind.
How many amps does a typical household appliance draw?
On a US 120V circuit, a 60W bulb pulls about 0.5A, a 1,500W space heater pulls around 12.5A, and a 1,000W toaster pulls roughly 8.3A. (A microwave is a special case: its label is cooking-output power, so a '1,000W' microwave actually draws closer to 1,400W and 12A from the wall.) A standard 15A circuit can handle about 1,800W total, but the safe continuous limit is 80% of that, or about 1,440W. This is why running a heater and another high-wattage appliance on the same circuit often trips the breaker.
