Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate a percentage?
Multiply the number by the percentage, then divide by 100. For example, 20% of 50 = 50 × 20 ÷ 100 = 10.
What is 15% of 200?
15% of 200 is 30. (200 × 15 ÷ 100 = 30)
How do I find what percentage one number is of another?
Divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. For example, 30 is what % of 200? → 30 ÷ 200 × 100 = 15%.
How do I calculate a percentage increase or decrease of a number?
First find the percentage of the number, then add or subtract it from the original. For a 15% tip on a $50 bill, 15% of 50 is $7.50, so the total comes to $57.50. To take 20% off a $50 item, subtract 20% of 50 ($10) to get $40.
Why does X% of Y equal Y% of X?
Because multiplication is commutative, the order of the two numbers does not change the result. That means 8% of 25 equals 25% of 8, and both come out to 2. This trick can make mental math easier: 4% of 75 looks hard, but flipping it to 75% of 4 gives an obvious answer of 3.
