Effective Tax Rate Calculator

Effective Tax Rate
16%

Formula

Effective Rate = Tax Paid ÷ Income × 100

Your effective tax rate is the actual percentage of your income that goes to taxes. It's lower than your marginal tax bracket because only income above each threshold is taxed at the higher rate.

How to use

  1. Enter your Annual Income for the year.
  2. Enter the Total Tax Paid across the same period.
  3. Read your effective tax rate, after-tax income, and monthly take-home.

Example

With an Annual Income of $75,000 and Total Tax Paid of $12,000, the effective rate is 12,000 ÷ 75,000 × 100 = 16.0%, leaving $63,000 after tax, or about $5,250 per month.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is effective vs marginal tax rate?
Marginal rate is the rate on your last dollar earned. Effective rate is total tax ÷ total income — it's always lower.
What is a typical effective tax rate?
For many US earners, the effective federal income tax rate is roughly 5-18% — well below the top bracket they reach, since the standard deduction and lower brackets pull the average down. Adding state taxes raises the combined effective rate.
How can I lower my effective tax rate?
Contribute to tax-deferred accounts (401k, IRA), claim all eligible deductions, and use tax credits. Each of these reduces your taxable income or tax owed.
Should I include state and local taxes in the tax paid figure?
It depends on what you want to measure. If you enter only federal income tax, you get your federal effective rate; if you add state income tax, Social Security, and Medicare withholding, you get a fuller picture of your overall tax burden. For a true take-home comparison, add every tax withheld from your pay so the after-tax income matches what actually lands in your account.
Why is my effective tax rate lower than my tax bracket?
The US uses a progressive system, so only the income within each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate, not your entire income. Someone in the 22% bracket pays 10% and 12% on their lower income first, which pulls the blended average well below 22%. As a worked example, $12,000 of tax on $75,000 of income is an effective rate of just 16%, even if the top bracket touched is higher.
