Ideal Weight Calculator
Formula
Ideal Weight = 50 + 0.91 × (Height − 152.4 cm)
The Devine formula estimates ideal body weight based on height. Originally developed for drug dosing, it's commonly used as a general guideline. This uses the male formula. Individual factors like muscle mass, frame size, and body composition matter more than any formula.
How to use
- Enter your Height (cm).
- Choose your Sex from the dropdown.
- Read your ideal weight in kilograms and pounds.
Example
For a male who is 170 cm tall: 50 + 0.91 × (170 − 152.4) = 50 + 16.0 = 66.0 kg, or about 145.5 lbs. That is the Devine-formula estimate of ideal body weight at that height.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this accurate?
It's a rough guideline. Ideal weight varies significantly based on muscle mass, body frame, and individual factors. Use BMI range (18.5-24.9) as a more flexible guide.
Does this account for my body frame size?
No, the Devine formula uses only height and sex, so it can't tell whether you have a small, medium, or large frame. People with wider bones and broader shoulders naturally carry more weight at the same height, so a result a few pounds above 'ideal' may be perfectly normal for them. A quick frame check is wrist circumference relative to height, or you can simply treat the number as the middle of a healthy range rather than a target.
Is there a separate ideal weight formula for children?
Yes, the Devine formula was designed for adults and isn't reliable for kids or teens, who are still growing. For children, doctors use age-and-sex-specific BMI percentile charts from sources like the CDC instead of a fixed weight formula. If you're checking a child's weight, a pediatrician's growth chart is the right tool.
